I first visited South Dakota in early summer, 1964. I drove across the state from Cleveland, Tennessee, en route to Dillon, Montana. My most memorable stops along the way were in the Black Hill, Custer State Park, Mt. Rushmore, the Badlands, and of course, Wall Drug Store, where I got a free cup of ice cold water. From those earliest memories, South Dakota has long been one of my favorite states. I've criss-crossed the state numerous times during various road trips across the United States, and in the process have collected all 66 counties in the state.
